A graduate of the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University in Brno (formerly the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně) in 1984.

Career
He has been active in advocacy since 1984. First in a Chomutov legal aid bureau, and then from 1992 in Prague. He became a barrister in 1987.
From 1990 to 1992 he was a deputy at the Federal Assembly of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. He was a member of its Presidium, a member of the Constitutional Law Committee and the spokesperson for the Federal Assembly Commission for the Investigation of Events of 17 November 1989. He has proposed and co-authored several acts adopted by the Federal Assembly during this period (e.g. Act No. 451/1992 Coll., the so-called Lustracni Zakon, (literally a "light-casting law"), part of the Code of Civil Law relating to the protection of personal rights and enabling the recognition of financial compensation for non-proprietary harm etc.) During his long legal practice he has been involved in contentious, non-contentious and contractual proceedings. He focuses on obligation relationships, investment, civil rights and business law, and constitutional law.

Publishing activities
JUDr. Petr Toman is also an active publisher. Together with his colleague JUDr. Stanislav Devátý Dr., he has co-authored the publications “Ochrana dobré pověsti a názvu právnických osoby” (translator: ‘Protection for the good reputation and name of a legal entity’) (publisher Linde Praha, a.s. 2001), is co-author of “Komentáře k Občanského zákoníku” (translator: ‘Commentary on the Civil Code’) (publisher Linde Praha, a.s. 2002), co-author of the publication “Podepsat můžeš, přečíst musíš” (translator: You can sign it, but you must read it’)  issued by the Czech Consumers’ Association in 2005 and the publication “Umíme si půjčovat?” (translator: ‘Do we know how to borrow?’) issued by the Czech Consumers’ Association in 2006. From 2004 to 2006 he was the author of the regular column “Právník radí” (translator: ‘A lawyer advises’) in the Sunday edition of the Blesk newspaper.

Awards
In the first ever annual LAWYER OF THE YEAR competition held in 2005 by the law portal EPRAVO CZ, JUDr. Petr Toman was voted LAWYER OF THE YEAR 2005 by the lay public.
In the second year of the annual LAWYER OF THE YEAR competition held in 2006 by the law portal EPRAVO CZ and the Czech Bar Association, JUDr. Petr Toman came second in the category Lawyer of the Year 2006 as voted by the lay public.

Other activities
JUDr. Petr Toman is registered in the list of barristers maintained by the Czech Bar Association under No. 0685. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Committee for External Relations of the Czech Bar Association. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Committee for Expert Aid and Protection of the Interests of Barristers of the Czech Bar Association. Since 2006 he has been chairman of the editorial board of BULLETIN ADVOKACIE (translator: ‘Advocacy bulletin’).
JUDr. Petr Toman is registered in the list of barristers of the Slovak Bar Association under No. 1307 and is therefore authorised to provide legal services within the Slovak Republic.
JUDr. Petr Toman is an arbitrator at the arbitration court IUSTITIA - rozhodčí řízení, spol. s r.o. registered offices Trojanova 12, Praha 2 (www.irr.cz), which he established with his colleagues for arbitrating disputes pursuant to Act No. 216/1994 Coll. on arbitration proceedings.
